2004 in Massachusetts brought gay and lesbians the right to legally marry. A simple sentence: subject, predicate, nouns and verb, yet carrying the weight 
of history and more importantly, an emotional uplift the gay and lesbian community has never before experienced. Although Massachusetts is the only state in the country with this right, the Supreme Judical Court's decision of November 2003 energized gays and lesbians everywhere. Couples in San Franscisco and one county in Oregon went to their city halls and were married, although the licenses were not legal under state law. Sanctioned by government or not, the act of gay and lesbian couples marrying is the activism that is needed to make the right open to all.
